Introduction:

As a leader in a translation company, I had the privilege of spearheading critical translation projects during this turbulent time. In this blog post, I will share my experiences in managing complex translation projects for an international organization that required content to be translated into over 30 languages across Africa and Asia. Beyond mere translation, our goal was to ensure the content was culturally sensitive and easily comprehensible for each unique audience.

Understanding the Challenge: Multilingual Diversity in Communication

The pandemic highlighted the need to convey vital information in languages understood by all. The company I worked with had a significant presence in Africa and Asia, necessitating translations in over 30 languages to reach their diverse workforce.

Content Analysis and Cultural Sensitivity: Beyond Literal Translation

Effective translation goes beyond language conversion; it requires an understanding of cultural nuances. Analyzing the content helped us localize it, making it more relatable and comprehensible to the diverse audience, particularly considering the varying healthcare access in different parts of the world.

Prioritizing Speed and Precision: The Urgency of Information Dissemination

With COVID-19 information evolving rapidly, timely communication was paramount. Implementing efficient project management strategies enabled us to handle multiple translations swiftly and accurately. This ensured that essential information reached employees promptly, aiding in their safety during the pandemic.

Addressing Cultural Disparities: The ‘Call Your Doctor’ Dilemma

A striking example of the need for cultural sensitivity was in translating messages like “call your doctor if you have a fever.” Understanding that this approach is not universal, especially in developing countries, we collaborated with the client to adapt the message. In many regions, individuals do not have personal doctors and must visit clinics or hospitals, emphasizing the importance of context in translations.

Conclusion:

The experience of leading translation projects during the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the crucial role of language and cultural understanding in crisis communication. Swift and accurate translations, adapted to the local context, were vital in ensuring essential information reached every corner of the globe, irrespective of varying healthcare realities. This journey emphasized that effective communication is about bridging gaps and embracing diversity, especially in times of crisis. Need help with Translation, Localization and Project Management.
